Railways Intensifies Focus on Safety and Maintenance

New Delhi, September 3, 2026: Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed railway officials to take time-bound action to address technical, safety and maintenance-related deficiencies across the network.

The directions were issued during a detailed safety review meeting at Rail Bhawan, attended by the Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Railway Board members, General Managers of Zonal Railways, Divisional Railway Managers and senior officials.

A major focus of the meeting was strengthening railway infrastructure and maintenance systems to prevent avoidable safety risks and improve operational reliability.

Signalling and OHE Maintenance to Be Prioritised

The Railway Minister directed officials to address technical deficiencies in signalling systems on a mission-mode basis.

For Overhead Equipment (OHE), officials were instructed to ensure timely maintenance and replacement of components that have completed their prescribed service life. Regular attention to ageing OHE infrastructure is expected to support the reliability of electrified railway operations.

Coach Fire Safety and Wagon Maintenance Under Focus

The review also placed particular emphasis on workshop maintenance, including the condition of passenger coaches.

Officials were directed to pay special attention to electrical circuits and wiring associated with fire safety in coaches. Maintenance of couplers and wheels of both coaches and wagons was also highlighted as an important area requiring close monitoring.

For track infrastructure, the Railway Minister stressed proper maintenance of point machines, turnouts and fasteners, with arrangements to ensure that missing fasteners are replaced.

Strict Action Against Poor-Quality Suppliers

Indian Railways has also called for stronger accountability in the procurement and supply chain.

Where deficiencies are identified in materials supplied for Signalling & Telecommunication (S&T), OHE, tracks, coaches or wagons, stringent action is to be taken against the concerned suppliers.

In cases involving deliberate negligence, officials have been directed to permanently blacklist the supplier. The move is aimed at strengthening quality control and ensuring that safety-critical railway components meet required standards.

Advance Planning for Festival and Fair Crowds

The review also addressed the seasonal passenger surge associated with festivals and fairs.

Railway officials have been instructed to coordinate with district and state administrations and identify locations where sudden increases in passenger crowds are expected.

Advance planning will allow railway authorities to arrange necessary passenger facilities and crowd-management measures before demand peaks.
