Indian Railways has commissioned KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on South Central Railway (SCR), marking an upgrade in its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology. The new version has been deployed across 108 Route Kilometres (RKM) on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division.

The commissioning upgrades the section from KAVACH Version 3.2 to Version 4.0, incorporating improvements aimed at more precise train positioning, better signal information and stronger integration with existing railway signalling and communication infrastructure.

Key Highlights

  • KAVACH 4.0 commissioned for the first time on South Central Railway.
  • Deployment completed across 108 route km on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section.
  • Upgrade from KAVACH 3.2 to 4.0.
  • Improved train location accuracy.
  • Enhanced signal information in larger railway yards.
  • Station-to-station communication through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC).
  • Direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems.
  • KAVACH 4.0 is planned for large-scale deployment across Indian Railways.
  • System carries Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) certification requirements.

KAVACH 4.0 Brings New Safety and Signalling Capabilities

KAVACH 4.0 has been developed as an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system to support safer train operations across India’s diverse railway network.

The upgraded system incorporates experience from the deployment of KAVACH Version 3.2 across 1,465 route km on South Central Railway.

Among the key technological improvements is greater location accuracy, allowing more precise positioning of trains. The system also provides improved information on signal aspects in larger yards, supporting better situational awareness for train operations.

Another upgrade is the station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable, which strengthens communication and system integration along railway sections.

KAVACH 4.0 can also interface directly with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, allowing the new technology to integrate more effectively with established railway signalling infrastructure.

Automatic Train Protection to Support Safer Operations

KAVACH is designed to assist locomotive pilots in maintaining trains within prescribed speed limits. Where required, the system can automatically apply brakes if the locomotive pilot does not respond appropriately.

The technology is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speeds in critical situations and reduce the risk of train collisions. It also supports train operations during challenging weather conditions.

Given the safety-critical nature of the technology, KAVACH requires certification at Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4).

Extensive Infrastructure Required for Deployment

Rolling out KAVACH involves more than installing equipment inside locomotives. Railway sections require a network of supporting infrastructure, including:

  • Station KAVACH at stations and block sections
  • RFID tags along railway tracks
  • Telecommunications towers
  • Optical Fibre Cable along the railway section
  • Loco KAVACH equipment on locomotives

The combination of onboard and trackside systems enables communication and coordination between trains, signalling infrastructure and railway control systems.

What It Means for Hospitality, Travel & Tourism

Railways remain a critical component of India’s domestic tourism network, connecting major cities with heritage destinations, pilgrimage centres, leisure markets and emerging tourism locations.

While KAVACH 4.0 is primarily a railway safety technology, stronger safety and signalling infrastructure can contribute to passenger confidence and the reliability of long-distance rail travel.

For the hospitality and tourism sector, the wider relevance includes:

  • Safer passenger journeys for domestic and leisure travellers.
  • Stronger railway infrastructure supporting tourism-heavy routes.
  • Improved operational technology across busy railway corridors.
  • Potentially greater confidence in rail-based tourism and pilgrimage travel.
  • Continued technology upgrades supporting India’s broader multimodal tourism network.

Industry Takeaway

The commissioning of KAVACH 4.0 on 108 route km of South Central Railway marks another stage in Indian Railways’ deployment of indigenous Automatic Train Protection technology. With improved positioning, signalling information and system integration, the upgraded platform provides a technological foundation for wider deployment across the railway network.

For travel and tourism, the development is part of the broader infrastructure push towards safer and more technology-enabled rail journeys, an important component of India’s domestic passenger and tourism ecosystem.
