21 Stations in Samastipur Division to Receive Modern Signalling Systems
New Delhi, September 1, 2026: Indian Railways has approved ₹233 crore for the installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at 21 stations in the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway (ECR).
Under the project, existing Panel Interlocking systems will be replaced with computer-based Electronic Interlocking technology. The upgrade is expected to modernise signalling infrastructure across the identified stations and create the technical foundation required for the implementation of Kavach, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection system.
Electronic Interlocking to Improve Railway Safety and Efficiency
Electronic Interlocking is a modern signalling technology designed to manage and control train movements more efficiently than conventional relay- or panel-based systems.
The upgraded systems are expected to provide greater reliability, quicker fault diagnosis, easier maintenance and enhanced operational flexibility. Modernising station-level signalling can also help railway authorities manage train movements more effectively and strengthen overall operational safety.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ continuing efforts to replace ageing signalling infrastructure with advanced systems and expand the technological ecosystem supporting Kavach.
Supporting the Wider Kavach Rollout
The Electronic Interlocking programme is particularly relevant to Indian Railways’ broader railway safety strategy. As Kavach coverage expands across the network, modern signalling infrastructure at stations is an important component of creating an integrated train protection and signalling environment.
The Samastipur Division project therefore combines signalling modernisation with the wider deployment of indigenous railway safety technology.
Impact on Hospitality, Travel and Tourism
While the project is primarily focused on railway signalling and safety, its benefits can extend to India’s travel and tourism ecosystem.
- Greater passenger confidence: Modern signalling infrastructure strengthens the safety framework supporting passenger rail travel.
- More efficient train operations: Better signalling can contribute to smoother management of train movements and reduce operational disruptions.
- Tourism connectivity: Samastipur Division serves a significant rail network in Bihar and its surrounding regions. Improvements to railway infrastructure can support more dependable travel for leisure and pilgrimage visitors.
- Hospitality demand: Reliable rail connectivity can positively influence tourist footfall, benefiting hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and local tourism businesses.
- Stronger regional mobility: Improved railway infrastructure supports business travel and movement between regional centres, creating wider opportunities for the hospitality sector.
Why It Matters
The ₹233-crore Electronic Interlocking project highlights the shift towards technology-driven railway infrastructure in India. By upgrading signalling at 21 stations and supporting Kavach implementation, Indian Railways is strengthening the safety and operational foundation of the passenger network while creating more reliable conditions for future growth in travel, tourism and hospitality.
