New Road Over Bridge at Level Crossing No. 305 aims to improve road safety, reduce congestion and enable uninterrupted movement

Key Highlights

  • ₹153 crore sanctioned for a 4-lane Road Over Bridge on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section.
  • Project will replace road traffic movement through Level Crossing No. 305.
  • Railway bridge will span 106 metres, supported by two 53-metre composite girders.
  • A 150-metre viaduct and 595-metre railway approach are also planned.
  • Project is expected to reduce waiting time, congestion and safety risks for commuters.

Indian Railways has approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Level Crossing No. 305 on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section of Western Railway in Gujarat, with an estimated cost of ₹153 crore.

The project is aimed at improving road safety and traffic movement in the densely populated urban area, where the existing level crossing can result in delays and congestion for road users.

106-metre railway bridge to form part of the project

The railway portion of the new ROB will have a total length of 106 metres, comprising two 53-metre composite girders.

The structure will be followed by a 150-metre viaduct, while the railway approach will extend for approximately 595 metres.

The larger structure and longer approaches are required because of the project’s location in a densely populated urban area.

Uninterrupted road movement expected

Once operational, the four-lane ROB will allow vehicles to cross the railway line without having to wait for trains at the level crossing.

The project is expected to provide commuters with safer passage, shorter travel times and reduced congestion, while improving the overall efficiency of road movement in the area.

The work has been sanctioned under Western Railway’s ongoing umbrella programme covering the construction and rebuilding of Road Over Bridges, Road Under Bridges and Foot Over Bridges, along with drainage improvement works.

Impact on travel, tourism and hospitality

Although the project is primarily a transport infrastructure initiative, improved road connectivity can have a wider impact on the travel ecosystem.

Faster local mobility: Reduced waiting at the railway crossing can improve journey times for residents, commuters and commercial vehicles.

Tourism movement: Smoother road connectivity can benefit tourists travelling between Ahmedabad and surrounding destinations, particularly for road-based itineraries and local sightseeing.

Hotels and restaurants: Better accessibility can support visitor movement to accommodation, dining and other hospitality businesses located along the corridor.

Logistics and tourism operators: Tour operators, taxis and other transport services could benefit from reduced delays and more predictable journey times.

Bottom line

The ₹153 crore Geratpur-Ahmedabad ROB project is designed to remove a major road-rail conflict point and provide safer, uninterrupted vehicle movement. For the wider travel ecosystem, the project adds to the infrastructure needed for faster, more reliable and efficient movement around Ahmedabad and its surrounding urban areas.
