Capacity expansion to strengthen passenger mobility, freight logistics and tourism access across one of Gujarat’s fastest-growing regions

Bhuj, June 17, 2026: Indian Railways has approved the ₹493 crore doubling of the 49-kilometre Adipur–Bhuj rail section in Gujarat, a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing capacity, improving operational efficiency and supporting future passenger and freight growth in the Kutch region.

The project, sanctioned under Indian Railways’ ongoing network capacity augmentation programme, will transform a key single-line section on the Gandhidham–Naliya corridor into a doubled route, enabling smoother train operations and creating additional capacity for both passenger and freight services.

The investment comes as multiple railway expansion projects across Kutch move closer to completion, positioning the region for increased economic activity, tourism growth and logistics development.

Key Highlights

  • ₹493 crore sanctioned for doubling of the Adipur–Bhuj rail section
  • 49-km route to be upgraded from single line to double line
  • Two additional passenger train services planned in each direction daily
  • Additional freight handling capacity of 12 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA)
  • Supports growing rail traffic in the Kutch region
  • Enhances connectivity to industrial, tourism and border areas
  • Improves operational efficiency and reduces future congestion

Strategic Upgrade for a Growing Corridor

The Adipur–Bhuj section forms an important link within western Gujarat’s railway network and serves as a gateway to the wider Kutch region.

Rail traffic on the corridor is expected to increase substantially due to several ongoing railway infrastructure projects, including:

  • Bhuj–Naliya Gauge Conversion
  • Naliya–Vayor rail extension
  • Naliya–Jakhau new railway line
  • Vayor–Lakhpat rail connectivity project
  • Deshalpar–Luna railway line

As these projects become operational, additional passenger and freight traffic will increasingly move through the Adipur–Bhuj corridor, making capacity expansion essential.

Enhanced Passenger Connectivity

Upon completion, the doubling project is expected to facilitate the operation of two additional passenger train services in each direction every day.

The expanded capacity will improve connectivity between Bhuj, Gandhidham and other important destinations across Gujarat while supporting rising travel demand from residents, business travellers and tourists.

Improved scheduling flexibility and reduced operational constraints are also expected to enhance service reliability and passenger convenience.

Strengthening Freight and Industrial Logistics

The doubled line will enable movement of an additional 12 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, significantly strengthening logistics infrastructure in western Gujarat.

Kutch has emerged as one of India’s major industrial and logistics hubs, supported by ports, manufacturing clusters, energy projects and export-oriented industries.

Improved rail capacity will facilitate faster cargo movement, support industrial supply chains and enhance connectivity between production centres, ports and inland markets.

The project is expected to play an important role in supporting the region’s long-term economic growth trajectory.

Supporting Tourism in Kutch

Beyond freight and industrial benefits, the project is expected to improve accessibility to one of Gujarat’s most distinctive tourism destinations.

Kutch attracts visitors for its cultural heritage, handicrafts, desert landscapes, wildlife experiences and events such as the globally recognised Rann Utsav. Improved rail connectivity can support growing tourist arrivals by offering more convenient and reliable access to the region.

Enhanced rail infrastructure also strengthens connections to destinations such as Bhuj, the White Rann, Mandvi, Dholavira and other heritage and eco-tourism attractions that continue to gain popularity among domestic and international travellers.

Benefits for Hospitality and Travel Businesses

For hotels, resorts, tour operators and hospitality businesses, improved railway connectivity often translates into greater visitor mobility and stronger tourism demand.

Better rail access can encourage longer stays, facilitate group travel and improve accessibility for leisure, cultural and business travellers exploring the Kutch region.

The project also supports broader regional development initiatives aimed at positioning Kutch as a destination for tourism, trade, renewable energy and investment.

Preparing for Future Demand

Indian Railways estimates that line capacity utilisation on the Adipur–Bhuj section could reach 123 percent by 2029-30, underscoring the need for timely infrastructure expansion.

The doubling project will help decongest the route, improve operational flexibility and create sufficient capacity to accommodate future growth in both passenger and freight traffic.

A Catalyst for Regional Development

The Adipur–Bhuj Doubling Project reflects Indian Railways’ broader commitment to developing future-ready infrastructure that supports economic growth, tourism expansion and regional connectivity.

By enhancing transportation capacity in one of western India’s most strategically important regions, the project is expected to contribute to stronger logistics networks, improved travel experiences and increased opportunities for investment and development across Kutch.

As Gujarat continues to emerge as a key driver of India’s industrial and tourism economy, investments in rail infrastructure such as the Adipur–Bhuj doubling project will play a crucial role in supporting sustainable long-term growth.
