Centre Reviews Agriculture and Rural Development Roadmap in West Bengal; Jute Sector Gets Special Focus
New Delhi, July 13: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan has embarked on a two-day visit to West Bengal to strengthen Centre-State collaboration on agriculture, rural infrastructure and farmers’ welfare while placing renewed emphasis on the state’s strategically important jute sector.
The visit combines policy-level discussions with direct interactions on the ground, reflecting the government’s approach of linking governance with farmer engagement and technology adoption.
High-Level Centre-State Review
During his visit, the Union Minister is scheduled to hold discussions with the West Bengal leadership on strengthening implementation of key agriculture and rural development programmes.
A comprehensive review meeting involving senior officials from both the Central and State governments will assess the progress of flagship initiatives, including:
- PM-KISAN
- Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
- PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
- Minimum Support Price (MSP) operations
- Viksit Bharat–GRAM G Yojana
- Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)
- Rural housing initiatives
- Panchayati Raj funding and rural infrastructure
The meeting will also examine future strategies to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen rural connectivity and expand livelihood opportunities across the state.
Special Focus on Jute Farmers
A major highlight of the visit is the Minister’s interaction with jute farmers at the ICAR–Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF), Barrackpore.
The discussions will focus on addressing key challenges faced by jute growers, including:
- Retting techniques
- Water availability
- Pest and disease management
- Rising production costs
- Market access and pricing
- Increasing farmers’ share in the jute value chain
Scientists from ICAR-CRIJAF will demonstrate improved jute varieties, scientific retting methods, water-efficient cultivation practices and modern processing technologies aimed at improving productivity and quality.
Promoting Rural Entrepreneurship
The visit will also include interactions with women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to explore opportunities for manufacturing jute-based value-added products.
The government aims to encourage rural entrepreneurship by promoting diversified jute products that can generate additional household income and create sustainable employment opportunities in villages.
By integrating research, skill development and market access, the initiative seeks to strengthen West Bengal’s position as India’s leading jute-producing state.
Strengthening Rural Development
Officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, along with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), are accompanying the Union Minister to facilitate discussions on improving programme implementation and strengthening collaboration between the Centre and the State.
The visit underlines the government’s continued focus on improving farm incomes, expanding rural infrastructure and supporting technology-led agricultural development.
Impact on Hospitality, Food Processing and Tourism
The visit has significant implications for the hospitality, food processing and rural tourism sectors. Stronger agricultural infrastructure and improved implementation of farmer welfare schemes can enhance the supply of quality raw materials to food processing industries, benefiting hotels, restaurants and institutional catering businesses.
The emphasis on jute value addition also supports sustainable hospitality by encouraging wider adoption of eco-friendly jute products such as shopping bags, packaging materials, tableware, décor items and hotel amenities as alternatives to single-use plastics.
Improved rural infrastructure through better roads, housing and village development programmes can further boost rural tourism and agri-tourism in West Bengal by improving connectivity to farming communities, cultural destinations and craft clusters. At the same time, empowering women Self-Help Groups through jute-based entrepreneurship creates new opportunities for local handicrafts, souvenirs and sustainable tourism products, aligning with the growing demand for environmentally responsible travel experiences.
