New MoU Aims to Strengthen Destination Branding, Increase International Tourist Arrivals and Position India as a Global Travel Hub

India’s tourism promotion strategy received a significant boost as the Ministry of Tourism signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Air India to jointly promote the country as a preferred global tourism destination under the Incredible India brand. Signed in New Delhi on July 27, the strategic collaboration seeks to combine the Ministry’s destination marketing initiatives with Air India’s rapidly expanding domestic and international network to enhance India’s visibility among global travellers.

The partnership is designed to strengthen inbound tourism, elevate India’s destination branding and reinforce the country’s ambitions of becoming a major global aviation and tourism hub. The agreement is non-commercial, non-binding and does not involve any financial commitment from either side.

Key Highlights

  • Ministry of Tourism signs strategic MoU with Air India
  • Joint promotion of India under the Incredible India brand
  • Focus on increasing international tourist arrivals
  • Global destination marketing through Air India’s international network
  • Tourism storytelling via in-flight entertainment and digital platforms
  • Potential branding opportunities on aircraft, boarding passes and inflight media
  • State Tourism Boards to be integrated into destination promotion initiatives
  • Joint Working Group to oversee implementation
  • Initial agreement valid for two years, extendable by one year

What the Partnership Will Deliver

The collaboration creates a structured framework for coordinated tourism promotion across multiple channels. The Ministry of Tourism and Air India will jointly undertake global marketing campaigns, destination branding initiatives and content development to showcase India’s diverse tourism offerings.

Air India will leverage its expanding international footprint and customer touchpoints to distribute tourism-related content, including through:

  • In-flight entertainment systems
  • Digital communication platforms
  • Marketing campaigns
  • International passenger engagement channels

The two organisations will also explore co-branded destination storytelling and promotional opportunities across both digital and offline platforms.

Additionally, branding opportunities may extend to Air India’s aircraft livery, boarding passes and in-flight media, subject to feasibility and mutual agreement.

Greater Collaboration with States

The MoU also aims to bring State Tourism Boards and other tourism stakeholders into a unified promotional framework. This collaborative approach is expected to give greater visibility to destinations beyond the traditional tourism circuits, supporting regional tourism development across India.

A Joint Working Group comprising representatives from both organisations will monitor implementation, identify new promotional opportunities and periodically review the progress of the collaboration.

Hospitality Industry Impact

The partnership is expected to create new opportunities across India’s hospitality and tourism ecosystem.

Hotels

Greater international destination marketing can translate into higher inbound tourist arrivals, supporting increased occupancy across luxury, upscale, midscale and boutique hotels, particularly in emerging destinations.

Food & Beverage

An increase in overseas visitors is likely to benefit restaurants, cafés, local culinary experiences and regional food tourism by driving greater spending from international travellers.

Travel & Tourism

Tour operators, destination management companies (DMCs), travel advisors and experience providers could benefit from stronger global awareness campaigns, especially as lesser-known destinations receive wider promotion.

Aviation & MICE

With Air India playing a central role in destination promotion, the initiative also supports India’s ambitions to strengthen business travel, conferences, incentive tourism and international connectivity.

Why It Matters

As India continues investing in tourism infrastructure, aviation expansion and destination marketing, strategic collaborations between government and airlines are becoming increasingly important in attracting global travellers. By combining the credibility of the Incredible India campaign with Air India’s international reach, the partnership seeks to enhance India’s global tourism brand while creating long-term opportunities for the hospitality, travel and aviation sectors.
