The Indian food service industry is growing rapidly. According to a report by National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), the food services industry is expected to grow to 7.76 trillion rupees by FY28 at an 8.1% CAGR. The cafés and bars market is predicted is also projected to see a sustained momentum reaching $26.17 billion by 2029, according to Mordor Intelligence. As this market continues to evolve and become more competitive, restaurants are searching for ways other than food and drink to stand out and better connect with customers.
One of the key trends driving change in the industry right now is the increased importance of live entertainment. Restaurants are beginning to curate programming that makes dining a much more interactive social experience. This includes screening sports events, hosting live music, stand-up comedy shows, DJ nights, quiz evenings and community-led events at restaurants. Once viewed as fleeting promotional activations, these types of initiatives are becoming a crucial component in how brands in the hospitality sector attract guests and create return visits, along with fostering a greater affinity to the brand.
Live events and sports events in particular have become a prime opportunity for the restaurant sector. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has had consistent demand for live viewing, with customers wanting to view and enjoy the high energy of a restaurant versus home. A parallel trend is also happening right now with the FIFA Club World Cup 2026 where football fans are looking for locations to come together to create a collective viewing experience. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup quickly approaching, restaurants will use marquee sporting events to bring in even larger groups.
However, the trend is not just limited to sports. Across the country, restaurants are developing annual programming calendars that include live music performances, open mic nights, cultural and educational experiences, themed and interactive events. These kinds of initiatives are allowing restaurants to create multiple consumer touch points, create business during non-peak hours, and connect their community with their brand. As consumers are increasingly prioritising experiences over transactions, curated programming is already becoming a significant differentiator in increasingly crowded marketplace.
Consumer expectations have changed, and as a result, restaurant offerings reflect this change. Today, restaurants are no longer solely seen as dining establishments but also places to celebrate milestones, events, connect with friends, discover new artists or just spending time together. For operators, entertainment is becoming a strategic business tool that can enhance food innovation and create longer-term customer loyalty through increased engagement.
Sharing her perspective Aditi Tihara, Senior Vice President, True Palate Hospitality (One8 Commune, Neuma and Pincode) said, “Consumers today are increasingly seeking experiences that go beyond dining. Restaurants are consequently evolving into lifestyle destinations where food, entertainment, and community come together. Live entertainment, whether it’s sporting events, music performances, stand-up comedy, or curated cultural evenings, is no longer just an add-on; it’s becoming an integral part of the hospitality experience. These experiences encourage guests to engage more deeply with the brand rather than treating visits as occasional indulgences. As consumer preferences continue to evolve, experiential offerings will become just as important as culinary innovation and will play an increasingly important role in how restaurants differentiate themselves and build lasting customer loyalty.”
As the evolution of India’s restaurants continues, live entertainment will continue to be a growing influence on how consumers prefer to experience food. For hospitality brands, creating unique experiences beyond the food menu will increasingly drive consumer engagement and loyalty as well as provide the competitive edge needed to be successful in a rapidly changing industry.
