Coal Loading Rises 22.5% Till October 18; Daily Dispatches Increase by 87 Rakes Compared with Last Year

Key Highlights

  • Indian Railways records 22.5% growth in coal loading from October 1–18, 2026, compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
  • Daily coal dispatches increase by 87 rakes year-on-year during the period.
  • An average of 430 coal rakes per day supplied to thermal power plants during the first half of FY 2026–27, marking 7.1% growth.
  • Coal rake dispatches rise 14% in September 2026 compared with September 2025.
  • Coordination with the Ministries of Coal and Power aims to maintain adequate coal stocks and support reliable electricity generation.

Indian Railways Strengthens Coal Transportation Capacity

Indian Railways has achieved an all-time high in coal loading during the first 18 days of October 2026, registering a 22.5% increase compared with the same period last year. The railway network dispatched an additional 87 coal rakes per day, reflecting its ongoing efforts to support the country’s energy requirements.

The increase comes amid rising energy consumption, higher industrial production and increased demand for coal-based power generation, particularly in parts of the country experiencing deficient rainfall.

Daily Coal Dispatches Rise in the First Half of FY 2026–27

During the first half of FY 2026–27, Indian Railways dispatched an average of 430 coal rakes per day to thermal power plants. This represents a 7.1% increase over the corresponding period in the previous financial year.

The upward trend continued in September 2026, when daily coal rake dispatches increased by 14% compared with September 2025. These figures highlight the railways’ role in transporting coal to power stations and supporting the continuity of electricity generation.

Coordination with Coal and Power Ministries

Indian Railways is coordinating closely with the Ministry of Coal to improve the efficiency of coal evacuation. It is also working with the Ministry of Power to sustain transportation and ensure adequate coal stocks at thermal power plants.

According to the Ministry, consistent coal movement has helped maintain steady stock levels at power plants, supporting reliable power generation amid increased demand.

What This Means for Hospitality and Travel & Tourism

Reliable electricity supply is essential for India’s hospitality and tourism sectors, which depend on uninterrupted power for guest rooms, kitchens, refrigeration, air conditioning, lighting, laundry operations and other essential services.

  • Hotels and resorts: Stable electricity generation supports daily operations and guest comfort, particularly at properties with energy-intensive facilities.
  • Restaurants and food services: Reliable power is important for refrigeration, food storage, cooking equipment and kitchen operations.
  • Airports and railway stations: Consistent electricity supports passenger facilities, lighting, information systems and other operational infrastructure.
  • Tourism destinations: Power reliability can help hospitality businesses and tourism facilities maintain services during periods of high demand.

While the coal-loading figures do not directly measure electricity availability for individual businesses or destinations, the continued movement of coal to thermal power plants supports the broader energy supply chain on which hospitality and travel infrastructure depend.

Outlook

The October coal-loading record and the increase in daily dispatches during the first half of FY 2026–27 underline Indian Railways’ contribution to the country’s coal supply network. Continued coordination among the Railways and the Ministries of Coal and Power remains central to meeting energy demand and supporting reliable power generation.
