Government Expands Digital Agriculture Ecosystem with Farmer IDs, AI, Satellites and Drone Technology

India’s agricultural digital transformation has crossed a significant milestone with the creation of more than 10.18 crore Unique Digital Farmer IDs, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

The Digital Farmer ID initiative is designed to simplify farmers’ access to government schemes while enabling faster and more transparent delivery of subsidies, insurance claims and financial support.

The platform integrates multiple flagship schemes, including:

  • PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi
  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
  • Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement
  • Agricultural credit delivery
  • Input distribution
  • Disaster relief assistance

By creating a unified digital identity, the Government aims to reduce paperwork, improve service delivery and strengthen data-driven agricultural governance.

The Government is increasingly using satellite imagery to modernise the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).

Major technology-driven initiatives include:

Yield Estimation System based on Technology (YES-TECH)

Satellite imagery and crop-yield models are helping generate technology-based yield estimates at the insurance unit level, improving the accuracy of crop insurance assessments.

Smart Crop Cutting Experiments

Satellite-derived vegetation indices are replacing random sampling by identifying variations in crop health, making Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) faster and more accurate.

Faster Dispute Resolution

Time-series satellite imagery enables objective verification of crop conditions, helping resolve disputes between State Governments and insurance companies while speeding up claim settlements.

Rapid Disaster Assessment

The Krishi Decision Support System (DSS) uses satellite imagery to quickly assess flood, drought and weather-related crop damage, significantly reducing response time during natural disasters.

Government Expands Agricultural Drone Ecosystem

The Ministry continues to promote drone adoption under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM).

Key initiatives include:

  • 50% financial assistance for agriculture graduates and small & marginal farmers in North-Eastern States purchasing Kisan Drones.
  • 40% subsidy for other farmers purchasing agricultural drones.
  • 40% assistance for establishing Custom Hiring Centres operating Kisan Drones.

So far:

  • 2,122 agricultural drones have been distributed or approved under SMAM.
  • 1,094 drones have been provided to Women Self Help Groups under the Namo Drone Didi Scheme.

Drone pilots are trained through DGCA-approved institutions, with 274 Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs) now operating across the country.
