Key Highlights

  • Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹135 crore rail flyover project at Bondamunda in South Eastern Railway.
  • The 4.59-km flyover will decongest the busy Rourkela–Bondamunda section.
  • The project will separate passenger and freight train operations, reducing operational conflicts.
  • Once completed, the corridor will be able to handle an additional 8 million tonnes of freight annually (MTPA).
  • The project supports freight movement linked to mining, steel production and industrial growth.
  • It has been approved under Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor initiative.

Indian Railways Sanctions ₹135 Crore Flyover Project to Modernise Bondamunda Rail Corridor

New Delhi, July 2, 2026: Indian Railways has approved the construction of a 4.59-km rail flyover between Bondamunda ‘A’ Cabin and Bondamunda Link ‘B’ Cabin in the South Eastern Railway, investing ₹135 crore to improve freight movement and reduce congestion on one of eastern India’s busiest industrial rail corridors.

The project is designed to strengthen operational efficiency on the Rourkela–Bondamunda section, which is witnessing increasing rail traffic driven by expanding mining activities and steel production.

Supporting Growth in India’s Industrial Freight Network

The Rourkela–Bondamunda corridor plays a critical role in transporting minerals and industrial products from Odisha’s mining belt.

According to Indian Railways, freight demand on the route is expected to rise significantly due to:

  • Expansion of SAIL’s Barsua–Taldih–Kalta mining complex.
  • Increased production at the Rourkela Steel Plant.
  • Planned doubling of this High-Density Network (HDN) route.

To address growing demand, the new flyover will enable passenger and freight trains to operate independently, reducing crossing conflicts and improving overall traffic flow through the busy Bondamunda Yard.

Improved Capacity and Operational Efficiency

Once operational, the flyover is expected to deliver multiple operational benefits, including:

  • Segregation of passenger and freight traffic.
  • Reduced congestion at Bondamunda Yard.
  • Improved train punctuality and reliability.
  • Higher line capacity.
  • Faster movement of freight trains.
  • Additional freight handling capacity of 8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The project forms part of Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening logistics infrastructure to support industrial growth and economic development.

Hospitality & Tourism Impact

While the project primarily focuses on freight operations, the segregation of freight and passenger traffic is expected to improve the punctuality and reliability of passenger trains using the Rourkela–Bondamunda corridor. This will enhance travel convenience for tourists and business travellers visiting Odisha, Jharkhand and neighbouring regions.

Better rail operations also benefit the hospitality sector by improving accessibility to destinations such as Rourkela, Simlipal National Park, Hirakud Dam, and various eco-tourism and industrial tourism circuits. Hotels, restaurants, transport providers and local tourism businesses stand to gain from smoother passenger movement and improved regional connectivity.

Additionally, stronger freight infrastructure supports hospitality supply chains by ensuring more efficient transportation of food products, beverages, construction materials and other essential goods, contributing to the long-term growth of both the tourism and industrial economy.
