Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan will undertake a day-long visit to Uttarakhand on June 26 to review agricultural development, engage directly with farmers and strengthen Centre-State coordination on rural development initiatives.
The visit will include meetings with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, senior state ministers and officials to assess the implementation of ongoing agricultural and rural welfare schemes while identifying future priorities for the state.
Direct Interaction with Farmers
A key highlight of the visit will be the Minister’s participation in the ‘Save the Farms Campaign’ in Rudrapur, where he will interact with farmers, inspect standing crops and gather first-hand feedback on farming challenges and opportunities.
The programme aims to bridge the gap between policymakers and cultivators by enabling direct discussions on issues affecting agricultural productivity, crop management and farmer welfare.
Focus on Agricultural Innovation
Earlier in the day, Shri Chouhan will attend an alumni conference at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, one of India’s premier agricultural institutions.
The conference will bring together former students, researchers and agricultural experts to discuss developments in agricultural education, research, technology and innovation. The Minister is expected to emphasise the role of academic institutions in supporting modern farming practices and strengthening extension services for farmers.
Centre-State Coordination on Rural Development
During his meeting with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, discussions will focus on agricultural growth, farmer welfare, rural infrastructure and the implementation of key Central Government schemes across Uttarakhand.
The review will also assess how effectively welfare programmes are reaching rural communities, with an emphasis on improving service delivery, strengthening inter-departmental coordination and accelerating development projects in the state.
The visit is part of the Centre’s continued efforts to maintain closer engagement with farmers while ensuring that agricultural policies and rural development programmes are implemented effectively at the grassroots level.
Hospitality & Tourism Impact
Although primarily focused on agriculture, the visit carries significance for Uttarakhand’s hospitality and tourism sectors, both of which are closely linked to the state’s rural economy.
Improved agricultural productivity supports the supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy products to hotels, resorts, homestays and restaurants across popular destinations such as Nainital, Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Corbett. Stronger farm-to-market linkages can also encourage local sourcing, an increasingly important trend in sustainable hospitality.
The emphasis on rural development and agricultural innovation may further strengthen agri-tourism and village tourism initiatives in Uttarakhand, creating new opportunities for farm stays, local food experiences and community-based tourism. As travellers increasingly seek authentic rural experiences and regional cuisine, investments in agriculture and rural infrastructure can generate long-term benefits for both farming communities and the state’s tourism economy.
