India’s Single Malt Boom Gets a Rulebook: IMWA Launches Certification Mark of Authenticity

New Delhi || 24 June 2026: The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) has announced the rollout of a Certification Trademark (hologram) for Indian single malt whiskies, marking a significant step towards standardising authenticity and quality in a rapidly expanding category. The initiative establishes a formal, industry-led framework to define and certify genuine Indian single malts amid growing global recognition and increasing domestic demand.

The Certification Trademark will function as a secure hologram affixed to qualifying products, offering a visible assurance of authenticity. It will be granted exclusively to manufacturers that comply with IMWA’s defined production standards, which are aligned with globally recognised benchmarks while accounting for India’s distinct terroir and climatic conditions.

To qualify, manufacturers must adhere to strict criteria that define Indian single malt whisky. These include the use of 100% malted barley with no molasses or neutral spirits; production at a single distillery in India; distillation in copper pot stills; and maturation for a minimum of three years in oak casks not exceeding 700 litres. The entire process, from mashing and distillation to maturation and bottling, must take place within India, with no external flavouring agents permitted.

Commenting on the development, Maj Gen (Dr) Rajesh Chopra, AVSM (Retd), Director General, IMWA, said: “As the Indian single malt category scales both domestically and globally, the need for a credible, industry-owned validation mechanism becomes critical. The certification mark is not just about compliance but about establishing a shared baseline of authenticity and process integrity. It aims to bring clarity in a fragmented market, reinforce consumer trust, and ensure that the category’s growth is built on verifiable standards rather than perception alone.”

The introduction of the certification is expected to address longstanding concerns around product authenticity, providing consumers with a reliable identifier in a market where definitions have often remained ambiguous. It will also enable more informed purchasing decisions while reinforcing quality benchmarks across the industry.

From a global standpoint, the move is likely to strengthen India’s positioning in the premium whisky segment by aligning production practices with international expectations. The framework is expected to support export readiness, enhance acceptance in key markets, and contribute to long-term category credibility.

As Indian single malts continue to gain traction for their distinct character and craftsmanship, the IMWA Certification Trademark is positioned to create a more structured, transparent, and globally competitive ecosystem for the category.

About the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA):

The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA), established in July 2024 as a not-for-profit industry body, serves as the unified voice of India’s malt whisky producers, with a mandate to protect, preserve, and promote the integrity of the category. Representing leading distillers, IMWA focuses on setting globally aligned standards for quality, authenticity, and production, while addressing challenges like misrepresentation and fragmented regulation. Through advocacy, standardisation, and frameworks around certification and intellectual property, the association aims to build international credibility for Indian malt whiskies. It also intends to position India as a serious, premium player in the global whisky landscape, rooted in its distinct terroir, craftsmanship, and evolving distillation excellence.
