New Daily Train Connects Mumbai with Konkan

Mumbai, September 3, 2026: Indian Railways has launched a new daily train service between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai and Sawantwadi Road, providing a direct rail connection between Mumbai and several important destinations across the Konkan region.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagged off the inaugural service.

The approximately 510-km route connects passengers from Mumbai with key towns and destinations across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, creating an additional travel option for residents, tourists, students, employees and families.

Overnight Timings Designed for Convenient Travel

The train will operate daily as Train No. 15087 CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express and Train No. 15088 Sawantwadi Road–CSMT Express.

The outbound service will depart CSMT at 11:55 pm and reach Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 pm the following day. On the return journey, the train will leave Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 pm and arrive at CSMT at 6:40 am the next morning.

The overnight schedule provides travellers with an additional option for travelling between Mumbai and Konkan without requiring a separate daytime journey.

The service will operate with an LHB rake, offering modern passenger coaches and improved onboard comfort.

Extensive Network Across Konkan

The train will stop at a wide range of stations, including Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi Road.

The extensive stoppage pattern makes the service relevant not only to Sawantwadi but also to multiple tourism and commercial centres throughout the Konkan belt.

Tourism and Hospitality Set to Benefit

The new rail service could provide a significant boost to Konkan’s tourism and hospitality ecosystem, particularly by improving direct access from Mumbai, one of India’s largest domestic travel markets.

Destinations across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are known for their beaches, coastal landscapes, heritage attractions and culinary offerings. Better rail access can make these destinations more accessible for short breaks, family holidays and longer leisure trips.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the additional arrangements being made for passengers travelling during Ganesh Utsav, one of Maharashtra’s major festivals.

According to the announcement, more than 370 special trains can be operated to facilitate passenger movement during the festival, depending on demand.

For the hospitality industry, the additional capacity is significant as Ganesh Utsav generates substantial seasonal movement between Mumbai and towns and villages across Konkan. Improved transport availability can support accommodation, food and local tourism businesses during the period.

Connectivity to Support Regional Economic Growth

Piyush Goyal said the new train would strengthen links between Mumbai and Konkan, benefiting families as well as students and employees travelling between the region and Mumbai.

Improved connectivity can also make Mumbai’s education, healthcare and employment opportunities more accessible to people from Konkan while strengthening economic connections between the city and the region.

The railway network can additionally support movement of local produce and other goods towards Mumbai, creating opportunities for regional producers and businesses.

Mumbai Railway Infrastructure Also Gets Major Push

The announcement also highlighted several major railway projects aimed at increasing Mumbai’s passenger-handling capacity.

According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, railway projects worth approximately ₹18,000 crore are currently underway in Mumbai. These include extending platforms to accommodate 15-coach suburban trains and modernising signalling systems.

The Railways has also sanctioned 238 new AC local train rakes for Mumbai. Delivery of the first AC local train is expected to begin in 2027, potentially bringing greater comfort and capacity to Mumbai’s suburban network.

Konkan Railway Electrification Completed

The government also highlighted the completion of electrification of the 741-km Konkan Railway route, which is expected to support more environment-friendly operations and higher train speeds.

The combination of electrification, additional train services and infrastructure upgrades is expected to strengthen rail connectivity along the Konkan coast.

Wider Infrastructure to Strengthen Maharashtra’s Connectivity

The Railway Minister also highlighted the completion of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors and the proposed East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni and Surat.

The proposed corridor is expected to improve connectivity with parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra and strengthen industrial and rural economic linkages.

Work on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is also progressing, including construction of the undersea rail tunnel connecting the BKC and Thane areas.
