Passenger Travel Boom and Freight Growth Reinforce Indian Railways’ Role in Tourism and Economic Connectivity
New Delhi, June 1: Indian Railways continued its growth trajectory in May 2026, recording strong performances across both passenger and freight segments despite global geopolitical challenges affecting logistics and supply chains.
According to official figures, the national transporter carried more than 61 crore passengers during May, compared to approximately 59 crore passengers during the same period last year. The increase was largely driven by robust growth in long-distance travel, with the non-suburban segment registering a 7.4 per cent rise in passenger numbers from 28 crore to 30 crore.
The figures underline the continued importance of rail travel as one of India’s most preferred transportation modes for both leisure and business journeys, particularly during the peak summer travel season.
To accommodate rising demand, Indian Railways operated a large number of Summer Special Trains across multiple routes, helping ease congestion and improve travel accessibility during one of the busiest periods of the year.
The expansion of modern passenger services also continued. Indian Railways now operates 164 Vande Bharat trains, including the recently introduced Sleeper Vande Bharat service connecting Howrah and Kamakhya. Meanwhile, the network of Amrit Bharat Express trains has expanded to 68 services following the inauguration of three new routes during May.
Alongside passenger growth, freight operations remained resilient despite challenges linked to the ongoing West Asia geopolitical situation.
Indian Railways loaded 145 million tonnes of freight during May 2026, representing a 1.3 per cent increase over the corresponding month last year.
Among the strongest-performing commodity groups were iron ore, which grew by 4.8 per cent, pig iron and finished steel at 3.5 per cent, fertilisers at 6.2 per cent, and the “other goods” category, which recorded a notable 16 per cent increase.
Coal, which remains the largest contributor to railway freight traffic, also maintained positive growth, supported by priority movement to thermal power plants and continuous monitoring of supply chains.
Railways officials noted that enhanced monitoring of container traffic and efficient asset utilisation helped maintain freight momentum despite disruptions affecting global logistics networks.
Why It Matters for Hospitality & Tourism
The steady rise in rail passenger traffic is a positive indicator for India’s tourism and hospitality sectors, particularly as domestic travel continues to drive demand across leisure, pilgrimage, cultural and business tourism segments.
The growth in long-distance travel suggests sustained interest in inter-state tourism, benefiting hotels, resorts, homestays, restaurants and local tourism operators across major destinations.
The expansion of premium services such as Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains is also improving travel convenience, reducing journey times and expanding access to destinations that may not be fully dependent on air connectivity.
For hospitality businesses, stronger rail connectivity can help attract visitors to emerging destinations, particularly in Tier-II and Tier-III cities where tourism infrastructure is rapidly expanding.
The introduction of the Sleeper Vande Bharat service is especially significant for overnight travel markets, offering an alternative to short-haul flights and enhancing accessibility to tourism circuits in eastern and northeastern India.
Freight Growth Supports Food, Hospitality and Supply Chains
The freight performance also carries implications for the hospitality and food service industries.
Efficient movement of fertilisers, agricultural inputs, steel, consumer goods and container cargo contributes to smoother supply chains across sectors, including food processing, hotel procurement and tourism infrastructure development.
With India’s hospitality industry increasingly dependent on reliable logistics for food, beverages, retail supplies and construction materials, strong rail freight performance helps support business continuity and cost efficiency.
Hospitality & Travel Industry Takeaway
Indian Railways’ twin achievements of rising passenger traffic and sustained freight growth demonstrate the transport sector’s growing contribution to India’s tourism economy. As rail connectivity improves through modern train services and expanded route networks, the sector is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving domestic tourism, supporting regional hospitality markets and facilitating economic growth across the country.
