Indigenous train protection system to cover entire Ahmedabad Division, strengthening passenger safety and supporting tourism and business travel in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, June 15, 2026: Indian Railways has approved a ₹140 crore project for the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across the remaining sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway, marking another significant step in the national railway modernization and safety enhancement programme.

The project will cover 598 route kilometres and 48 block sections, enabling full-scale deployment of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across the division. The initiative forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to strengthen operational safety and improve passenger confidence across one of India’s busiest rail networks.

Key Highlights

  • ₹140 crore sanctioned for Kavach Version 4.0 deployment
  • 598 route kilometres and 48 block sections to be covered
  • Entire Ahmedabad Division to come under Kavach protection
  • Project approved under Indian Railways’ nationwide Kavach expansion programme
  • Indigenous Automatic Train Protection system designed to prevent train collisions
  • Enhances operational safety, reliability and passenger confidence
  • Supports growing tourism and business travel demand in Gujarat

Ahmedabad Division Moves Towards Full Kavach Coverage

Indian Railways had already sanctioned Kavach implementation on approximately 702 route kilometres within the Ahmedabad Division. With the approval of the latest project, the remaining routes will also be integrated into the advanced safety network, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the division.

The move reflects the Railway Ministry’s continued focus on deploying indigenous technology to improve operational efficiency and reduce risks associated with train operations.

What is Kavach?

Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance railway safety through real-time monitoring and intervention.

The system helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes in potentially unsafe situations, regulates train speeds in critical zones and significantly minimizes the risk of collisions.

By integrating advanced communication and signalling technologies, Kavach acts as an additional safety layer between train operations and human decision-making, improving overall network reliability.

Strengthening Gujarat’s Transport Infrastructure

Ahmedabad Division serves as a vital transportation corridor connecting major economic, industrial and tourism destinations across Gujarat and western India.

The safety upgrade is expected to benefit millions of passengers travelling between Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar and several other key destinations, while supporting the movement of freight essential to the state’s manufacturing and export economy.

As Gujarat continues to attract investments in industry, commerce and tourism, enhanced railway safety infrastructure will play an important role in supporting seamless regional connectivity.

Impact on Travel and Tourism

For the travel and tourism industry, investments in rail safety translate directly into improved passenger confidence and a better travel experience.

Ahmedabad serves as a gateway to some of Gujarat’s most visited destinations, including the Statue of Unity, Gir National Park, Dwarka, Somnath, the Rann of Kutch and several heritage and spiritual tourism circuits. Safer and more reliable rail services can encourage greater domestic tourism movement, particularly among family travellers, senior citizens and group tour operators.

The modernization of railway infrastructure also supports sustainable tourism objectives by promoting rail as a safe and environmentally efficient alternative to road transport.

Benefits for Hospitality and Business Travel

Hotels, resorts, convention centres and tourism operators stand to benefit from improved railway reliability and passenger safety standards. Enhanced connectivity and safer journeys can support higher visitor movement across Gujarat’s leisure, pilgrimage and business destinations.

For the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector, dependable rail infrastructure strengthens accessibility to major urban centres and event destinations, contributing to the state’s growing reputation as a business and tourism hub.

With Kavach deployment expanding rapidly across the Indian Railways network, the Ahmedabad Division project reinforces the government’s commitment to creating a safer, smarter and more resilient transportation ecosystem that supports tourism growth, economic development and passenger welfare.
