The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, has launched the Livestock Insurance Portal to transform the delivery of livestock insurance services across the country under the Livestock Insurance activity of the National Livestock Mission (NLM).
The portal was launched in New Delhi on 28 September 2026 by Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, in the presence of Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, Union Minister of State, senior officials, representatives of State Governments, insurance companies and other sectoral stakeholders.
More than 4,000 participants joined the launch programme online.

Single Digital Platform for Livestock Insurance
The newly launched portal brings key livestock insurance processes onto a single technology-enabled platform.

It covers policy issuance, premium management, claim processing, beneficiary verification and real-time monitoring, connecting farmers with State Governments, insurance companies and implementing agencies.
The digital ecosystem is intended to simplify insurance-related processes and improve coordination between the stakeholders involved in implementation.
Over 30 Lakh Animals Already Insured
During the launch programme, Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, highlighted the contours of the livestock insurance activity, including premium rates and farmer contributions.

He informed that more than 30 lakh animals have already been insured during the year.
The development comes as the government seeks to expand access to insurance protection for livestock-dependent households and strengthen the delivery of the insurance component under the National Livestock Mission.
Protection Against Livestock-Related Financial Risks
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh highlighted the importance of livestock as a source of income and livelihood for millions of rural households.

He said timely and affordable insurance protection can help safeguard farmers against financial losses arising from mortality, disease outbreaks, accidents, natural calamities and other unforeseen risks.
The Minister also stressed the need for greater awareness among farmers so that they can make maximum use of the scheme. Insurance companies, State Governments and other stakeholders were urged to undertake wider publicity through social media and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns.
Focus on Transparency and Faster Claims
According to the Department, the portal is expected to improve the efficiency and transparency of livestock insurance delivery.
The platform is designed to:
- Simplify and expedite livestock insurance enrolment
- Improve transparency and accountability in claim settlement
- Enable real-time tracking and monitoring of policies
- Improve accessibility and ease of doing business for farmers and insurance providers
- Strengthen data-driven decision-making for scheme implementation
The initiative is part of the government’s broader focus on using digital technology to improve farmer-oriented services and support rural livelihoods.
Impact on Food, Hospitality and Tourism
Livestock insurance has an indirect but important connection with the wider food and hospitality ecosystem because livestock forms part of the upstream supply chain for dairy, meat and other animal-based products.
Greater risk protection for livestock farmers can contribute to the resilience of rural production systems that supply food businesses, hotels, restaurants, caterers and institutional kitchens. The digital insurance platform may also improve administrative efficiency for farmers and implementing agencies.
For the hospitality sector, however, the PIB release does not indicate any direct change in food prices, livestock supply or hotel and restaurant operations as a result of the portal’s launch.
