New Delhi, July 8, 2026:

The Government of India has approved large-scale procurement of copra and Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu, providing significant market support to growers and protecting them from distress sales amid fluctuating prices.

The approvals were granted by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan following proposals submitted by the Tamil Nadu government.

The twin interventions are aimed at ensuring remunerative prices for farmers while strengthening income security through government-backed procurement mechanisms.

₹1,049 Crore MSP Support for Copra Growers

Under the approved proposal, the Centre will procure 87,226 metric tonnes of copra during 2026, comprising:

  • 87,000 metric tonnes of milling copra
  • 226 metric tonnes of ball copra

The procurement will be undertaken under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the total MSP value of the approved procurement exceeds ₹1,049.16 crore, offering substantial financial support to coconut farmers across Tamil Nadu.

The move is expected to ensure assured market access, improve price realisation and protect growers from market volatility during the procurement season.

Market Support for Totapuri Mango Farmers

In a parallel decision, the Centre has approved the procurement of 96,879 metric tonnes of Totapuri mangoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).

The Market Intervention Price (MIP) has been fixed at ₹1,545.41 per quintal, enabling eligible farmers to receive government-backed price support if market prices fall below remunerative levels.

The intervention seeks to stabilise prices during the peak harvest season while ensuring better returns for mango growers.

Income Security and Rural Economy

The Agriculture Ministry said the procurement decisions are intended to safeguard farmer incomes, prevent distress sales and reinforce confidence in agricultural markets.

By providing assured procurement under both the Price Support Scheme and the Market Intervention Scheme, the Centre aims to strengthen the rural economy while ensuring producers receive fair compensation for their produce.

The combined procurement programme is expected to benefit thousands of copra and mango growers across Tamil Nadu during the 2026 marketing season.

Hospitality, Food Processing & Tourism Impact

The Centre’s procurement support is expected to have positive implications beyond agriculture, particularly for the food processing, hospitality and tourism sectors.

Tamil Nadu is a major producer of copra and Totapuri mangoes, both of which are widely used across the food and beverage industry. Stable prices and assured procurement help sustain production of coconut-based products, edible oils, sweets, bakery items, beverages and processed foods supplied to hotels, restaurants and catering businesses.

The procurement of Totapuri mangoes is also expected to support the state’s fruit processing industry, including the manufacture of mango pulp, juices, concentrates, ice creams and desserts that cater to domestic hospitality as well as export markets. A stable supply of quality mangoes benefits food processors and beverage manufacturers while helping hotels and resorts source seasonal produce at consistent quality.

For tourism, stronger farm incomes can stimulate economic activity in rural regions known for coconut cultivation and mango orchards, encouraging agri-tourism, local food experiences and farm-based hospitality initiatives. The intervention also supports the broader agri-value chain, contributing to supply stability for India’s growing hospitality and food service industry.
