INDIA, 06 OCTOBER 2026 – Sometimes, an extra day on the calendar is all the reason people need. New research* commissioned by Booking.com, one of the world’s leading online travel platforms, in partnership with YouGov, reveals that long weekends are becoming a popular trigger for travel among Indian travellers, with 64% of Indian travellers turning long weekends and calendar quirks into a spontaneous getaway. The findings point to a broader shift in travel behavior: Indians are increasingly finding reasons to travel everyday, rather than waiting for the next big holiday.
Whether it is dodging burnout, escaping the family chat group or simply realizing that a three-day weekend without travel is a wasted opportunity, Indian travellers are no longer waiting for major holidays. Over two in five (42%) say just seeing a long weekend on the horizon is enough to start packing, while 36% admit that a stressful workweek is reason enough to plan a break.
The Planned-Spontaneous Traveller
While many long-weekend trips begin with a spontaneous decision, the execution is calculated. More than one-third (36%) of Indian travellers add one or two additional leave to maximize their break, while 20% wait for the right deal before committing. For others, the appeal lies in keeping things simple: 19% take a quick break without using additional leave, while 16% turn the long weekend into a workcation.
Small Breaks, Big Travel Ambitions
For Indian travellers, a memorable long weekend is not necessarily about travelling farther, it’s about travelling smarter. Squeezing maximum value out of a few days off takes a mix of practicality and ambition. Nearly a quarter of travellers (24%) say their ideal long-weekend trip is somewhere new that fits within their budget. At the same time, convenience is equally critical, with 21% preferring a drivable escape under four hours, while 22% skip transit entirely to let a nearby hotel be the vacation destination itself. Meanwhile, 19% are ready to pack a bag and clear international immigration with just 72 hours on the clock.
More Than Just Time off
These long weekends serve a deeper purpose than simply filling free time. When asked what a long weekend truly represents, 22% describe it as a mini getaway that feels like a full vacation, while 21% treat it as a quick reset from the daily routine. Another 20% view it as non-negotiable quality time with family and friends and 19% see it as the ultimate way to make the most of limited time off.
The Long Weekend Paradox
Fitting a full itinerary into a few days comes with self-imposed pressure. 42% of Indian travellers admit that planning a short trip feels like a chore, as deciding where to eat, stay, and unwind without wasting a single second can quickly turn leisure into work. Still, a well-executed trip pays off. One -quarter (25%) define a successful break by getting strong value for money, while others judge it by meaningful time with loved ones (16%), scenic landscapes (12%) or simply returning to work on Monday with the best story in the room.
Santosh Kumar, Regional Head, South Asia at Booking.com, said: “Long weekends have evolved from simple days off into powerful triggers to travel ‘just because’. While many of these trips begin spontaneously, travellers remain thoughtful about how they spend their time, whether that’s extending a break, finding great value or choosing a stay that feels like a destination in itself. Whether it’s a quick road trip, a local staycation or an impromptu flight, Indians are making every extra day count, and Booking.com is dedicated to removing travel friction, making it effortless for people to turn any short break into a memorable escape.”
