Key Highlights

  • Indian Railways approves ₹238 crore infrastructure safety project on Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section
  • Works include slope stabilisation, tunnel rehabilitation and bridge protection
  • Project aimed at improving long-term safety and operational reliability
  • Safety interventions planned at vulnerable locations across the route
  • Rail section faces complex terrain, geological and weather-related challenges
  • Upgrade to strengthen connectivity for millions of pilgrims and passengers

Indian Railways has approved critical infrastructure protection and rehabilitation works worth ₹238 crore on the Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail section, a strategically important corridor connecting pilgrims and tourists to one of India’s most visited religious destinations.

The sanctioned works under Northern Railway include slope stabilisation measures, tunnel rehabilitation, bridge protection and treatment of tunnel seepage issues across vulnerable stretches of the route.

Rail Safety Upgrade Planned for Jammu–Katra Corridor

Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening rail safety and ensuring reliable connectivity in difficult terrain conditions.

According to the Ministry, detailed assessments of cuttings, tunnels and bridges along the Jammu–Katra section identified several locations requiring protection and rehabilitation measures.

The approved works include:

  • Slope stabilisation at vulnerable stretches
  • Rehabilitation of tunnels
  • Treatment of seepage-related issues inside tunnels
  • Bridge protection works
  • Additional safety interventions across the corridor

Officials stated that the project is aimed at enhancing the long-term resilience and operational reliability of the rail route.

Challenging Terrain and Weather Conditions Necessitate Upgrades

The Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section passes through complex mountainous terrain and has historically faced engineering and operational challenges linked to:

  • Difficult geological conditions
  • Landslide-prone areas
  • Heavy rainfall and extreme weather events
  • Tunnel seepage and slope instability

Indian Railways noted that despite these challenges, the route has remained operational through continuous infrastructure monitoring and timely maintenance interventions.

The newly approved works are expected to further strengthen the corridor against future weather-related and geological risks.

Strategic and Pilgrimage Connectivity to Benefit

The Jammu–Katra rail line is one of Northern Railway’s key passenger corridors, serving millions of pilgrims travelling annually to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry stated that the infrastructure strengthening measures will help ensure:

  • Safer passenger movement
  • Improved operational reliability
  • Reduced vulnerability to terrain-related disruptions
  • Better long-term infrastructure sustainability

Officials added that the project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise and safeguard critical rail infrastructure in geographically sensitive and high-traffic regions across the country.

Impact on Hospitality, Travel & Tourism Sector

The strengthening of rail infrastructure on the Jammu–Katra route is expected to provide a major boost to pilgrimage tourism and hospitality services linked to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi circuit. Improved safety, operational reliability and reduced disruption risks can enhance traveller confidence and support year-round movement of pilgrims and tourists to Jammu and Kashmir. The project could positively impact hotels, guest houses, travel operators, local transport providers and foodservice businesses dependent on pilgrimage traffic in Katra and surrounding regions. Enhanced rail reliability may also encourage longer stays and multi-destination tourism within Jammu and Kashmir, benefiting the broader regional tourism economy.
