Key Highlights

  • 56-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur gauge-converted rail section inaugurated in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Gwalior-Kailaras passenger train extended up to Birpur, improving direct connectivity with Gwalior.
  • More than 100 villages across Morena and Sheopur districts expected to benefit.

  • Railway budget for Madhya Pradesh rises from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27.
  • Railway projects worth around ₹1.55 lakh crore are currently underway in Madhya Pradesh.

The Gwalior-Chambal region is set for stronger rail connectivity following the inauguration of the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur railway section and the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Birpur.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, virtually inaugurated the section on August 18, 2026.

The newly commissioned rail connectivity is expected to improve access to Gwalior, Vijaypur, Sabalgarh and Birpur, while supporting travel for residents of rural and tribal areas.

More Than 100 Villages to Benefit

According to the Railway Ministry, residents of more than 100 villages across Bamor, Joura, Kailaras and Sabalgarh tehsils in Morena district and Birpur, Sheopur and Karahal tehsils in Sheopur district will benefit from the gauge conversion.

The extended train service is expected to make travel more affordable and convenient while improving access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities in Gwalior.

The improved rail network is also expected to support local trade and regional economic activity by providing better movement of people and goods.

Gwalior-Sheopur Rail Link Moves Closer to Completion

The Kailaras-Birpur section forms part of the wider 117-km Birlanagar-Birpur railway corridor, which has been progressively opened for passenger traffic over the past few years.

The next sections — Birpur-Seroni Road (37 km) and Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan (33 km) — are reportedly nearing completion.

Once completed, the railway line will further extend towards Sheopur Kalan and eventually Kota, providing the Gwalior-Chambal region with stronger links to major educational, industrial and commercial centres.

Madhya Pradesh Railway Investment Rises Sharply

Vaishnaw highlighted the significant expansion of railway investment in Madhya Pradesh. The state’s railway budget has increased from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27, representing an increase of nearly 24 times.

Railway projects worth approximately ₹1.55 lakh crore are currently underway in the state.

The state is also seeing the redevelopment of 80 railway stations, while five Vande Bharat services and seven Amrit Bharat trains are operating with connections to Madhya Pradesh.

Several major projects, including the Manmad-Indore new railway line and multiple third- and fourth-line projects, are also under development.

Rail Connectivity to Support Tourism and Emerging Industries

The expansion is particularly significant for the Gwalior-Chambal tourism economy. Better rail access can make destinations across the region more accessible to domestic travellers, while improving movement between Gwalior, Sheopur and other emerging tourism centres.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said improved rail infrastructure would support tourism, industrial development and employment, highlighting opportunities in sectors including battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing and tourism.

For the hospitality industry, improved connectivity could create opportunities for hotels, resorts, restaurants, local food businesses, tour operators and travel services as passenger movement increases across the region.

Better access to Gwalior can also help integrate the Gwalior-Chambal circuit into wider Madhya Pradesh tourism itineraries, potentially encouraging longer stays and greater visitor spending.

Railways’ Wider Expansion

The Railway Minister also highlighted that Indian Railways has recruited more than 5.54 lakh personnel since 2014, while electrification and modernisation remain key priorities.

With the Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan line moving towards completion, the latest development marks another step towards creating a more connected Gwalior-Chambal tourism and economic corridor, with potential benefits extending beyond passenger transport to hospitality, tourism and regional commerce.
