CPDO Western Region to be strengthened as a Centre of Excellence for poultry development, entrepreneurship and technology dissemination

Mumbai, September 13, 2026: Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Naresh Pal Gangwar, reviewed the functioning of the Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO), Western Region, Goregaon, Mumbai, and called for stronger poultry infrastructure, farmer training and biosecurity measures.

During the visit, Gangwar reviewed the organisation’s breeding, hatching, rearing and training activities and inspected its hatchery, brooder houses, parent stock, feed plant and training facilities. The implementation of the National Livestock Mission (NLM) and other poultry development schemes was also assessed.

Focus on Modern Poultry Infrastructure and Biosecurity

The DAHD Secretary emphasised the need to promote low-input technology birds, conserve indigenous poultry germplasm and strengthen biosecurity across poultry operations.

He also called for the modernisation of poultry infrastructure and directed officials to further strengthen farmer-oriented training and the supply of quality chicks.

The CPDO team was appreciated for its efforts in supporting poultry development and entrepreneurship.

CPDO Training Supports Poultry Entrepreneurship

Gangwar also interacted with poultry entrepreneurs who had received training at CPDO, Mumbai. The entrepreneurs shared their experiences and success stories, highlighting the role of training in developing poultry-based enterprises.

To improve access to technical knowledge, poultry management books in Hindi and Marathi were launched during the programme.

Successful trainee students of CPDO, Mumbai, were also felicitated for their achievements.

The programme additionally included an interaction with final-year BVSc & AH students of Mumbai Veterinary College, focusing on opportunities, challenges and emerging prospects in the veterinary and poultry sectors.

CPDO Mumbai Redevelopment Under Review

As part of the visit, officials also inspected the Poultry Gallery and held discussions with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) regarding the redevelopment of CPDO, Mumbai.

The visit is expected to provide direction for the future upgradation of CPDO Western Region as a Centre of Excellence in poultry development, training and technology dissemination.

Officials also participated in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative by planting saplings, highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability.

AQCS Mumbai Infrastructure and Biosecurity Reviewed

Gangwar also visited the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS), Mumbai, which plays a key role in protecting India’s animal-health biosecurity by preventing the entry of animal diseases through imported live animals and animal products.

He reviewed the station’s functioning and assessed ongoing and proposed infrastructure-development activities aimed at strengthening its operational capabilities.

Impact on Food, Hospitality and Tourism

A stronger poultry production and training ecosystem has direct relevance for the food and hospitality industry, particularly hotels, restaurants, caterers and institutional kitchens that depend on reliable supplies of poultry products.

Improved access to quality chicks, farmer training, modern infrastructure and stronger biosecurity can support a more organised poultry supply chain. For hospitality businesses, this can contribute to greater consistency in sourcing and food-safety practices.

The emphasis on indigenous poultry breeds and low-input technologies could also create opportunities for differentiated regional poultry products and farm-based enterprises. In rural destinations, poultry entrepreneurship and livestock development can complement agri-tourism and rural tourism, while creating additional livelihood opportunities around local food production.

The strengthening of AQCS infrastructure is also relevant to the wider food and animal-product supply chain, as stronger quarantine and certification systems support safeguards against the introduction of animal diseases through international trade.
