The installation aims to provide arriving passengers with an immersive introduction to Jharkhand’s tribal history, identity and cultural legacy.
UDAN Expansion: 100 New Airports and 200 Heliports Planned
Highlighting the rapid growth of India’s aviation sector under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Minister stated that the number of operational airports in India has increased from 74 in 2014 to 165 currently.
He further announced that under the Modified UDAN scheme:
- 100 new airports
- 200 heliports
will be developed across the country, particularly benefiting tribal regions and aspirational districts.
In Jharkhand, Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) operations have already begun at Jamshedpur Airport, while airports at:
- Dumka
- Hazaribagh
- Daltonganj
- Dhalbhumgarh
- Chaibasa
are planned for development under UDAN.
Ranchi Airport Expansion Plans Underway
The Minister also revealed major infrastructure expansion plans for Ranchi Airport in response to growing passenger demand.
According to official figures:
- Annual passenger traffic at Ranchi Airport has increased from 17 lakh to over 27 lakh in the last five years
- Aircraft movements and air cargo traffic have also recorded strong growth
To support future demand, the airport’s Domestic Security Hold Area will be expanded to 6,480 sqm, increasing peak-hour passenger handling capacity to 2,160 passengers.
Additional infrastructure proposals include:
- Parallel Taxi Track
- Rapid Exit Taxiway
- Two new aircraft parking aprons
These upgrades are expected to improve runway efficiency and operational capacity.
Affordable, Family-Friendly and Inclusive Travel Experience
The newly launched UDAN Yatri Café is designed to provide affordable food and beverage options for passengers, supporting the government’s vision of making air travel more accessible and inclusive.
Meanwhile, the Flybrary initiative aims to encourage reading culture and create more meaningful airport experiences for travellers.
A specially designed Kids Zone has also been introduced to improve travel comfort for families and children.
‘Vocal for Local’ Push Through AVSAR Outlet
As part of the government’s “Vocal for Local” initiative, Ranchi Airport has also launched an AVSAR (Airports as Venues for Skilled Artisans of the Region) outlet.
The platform will allow local and tribal artisans from Jharkhand to showcase and sell traditional handicrafts and art forms, including Sohrai paintings, which are increasingly gaining international attention.
Impact on Hospitality, Tourism & Regional Economy
Stronger Air Connectivity to Boost Tourism
The expansion of airport infrastructure and regional connectivity under UDAN is expected to strengthen domestic tourism flows into Jharkhand and surrounding tribal tourism circuits.
Improved connectivity may benefit:
- Eco-tourism destinations
- Tribal tourism experiences
- Wildlife tourism
- Business travel
- Religious tourism circuits
Opportunities for Hotels and Hospitality Businesses
Growing passenger traffic and improved airport infrastructure could support increased demand for:

Local Artisan Economy Gets Tourism Visibility
The AVSAR initiative can create new market access for regional artisans by integrating local culture directly into airport retail experiences, potentially benefiting handicraft tourism and souvenir markets.
Passenger Experience Becoming a Competitive Focus
Facilities such as affordable airport cafes, children’s zones and cultural installations reflect the aviation sector’s growing focus on passenger comfort and experiential travel — increasingly important factors for modern travellers and tourism stakeholders.
The developments at Birsa Munda Airport highlight how Indian airports are evolving into integrated travel and cultural hubs combining connectivity, regional identity and passenger-focused infrastructure.
