AIZAWL, May 26, 2026: The Government of India has announced a series of fisheries, dairy and livestock initiatives aimed at strengthening the Northeast’s food economy, with a major highlight being the approval of a ₹50 crore Fish Marketing Centre with cold-chain infrastructure in Mizoram.

The announcement was made during the Regional Review Meeting for the Northeastern Region held in Aizawl, where Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for fisheries projects worth ₹32.15 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF).

The Centre’s latest push is expected to improve fish handling, storage and distribution networks in the region while supporting value-added processing and market access for producers.

Focus on Food Supply Chains and Market Infrastructure

A key outcome of the meeting was the emphasis on strengthening fisheries value chains through integrated aquaparks, cluster-based development and modern production technologies.

Government officials highlighted that seven fisheries clusters have already been notified in the Northeast, while digitisation initiatives and infrastructure investments are expected to support higher productivity and exports.

The measures aim to improve scientific farming practices, strengthen disease prevention and support long-term livestock sustainability in a region where pork remains one of the most important protein sources and food industry segments.
