India Leads BRICS Dialogue on Livestock Innovation and Sustainable Feed Systems
New Delhi, June 1: India has intensified its efforts to strengthen international cooperation in livestock development and food security by hosting a high-level BRICS dialogue focused on advanced livestock technologies and sustainable feed systems.
Held virtually under India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026, the meeting brought together policymakers, researchers, dairy sector leaders and international experts to discuss innovations that can improve livestock productivity, animal nutrition and long-term sustainability across member nations.
The dialogue, organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), attracted participation from representatives of major agricultural economies including Brazil, China, Russia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE, alongside experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Addressing the gathering, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh highlighted the growing importance of livestock in supporting rural livelihoods, women’s empowerment and nutritional security across developing economies.
Participants identified several common challenges facing the livestock sector, including feed shortages, climate change impacts, disease outbreaks and productivity constraints. The discussions focused on the role of technology, scientific research and sustainable feed management in addressing these concerns.
The dialogue emphasised the need for stronger collaboration among BRICS countries in areas such as animal nutrition, feed innovation, livestock technology adoption and knowledge exchange. Experts also explored strategies for improving efficiency while reducing environmental pressures on livestock production systems.

National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah stressed the importance of innovation and sustainable feed systems in supporting future growth of the dairy and livestock industries, while senior officials from India’s Department of Animal Husbandry highlighted the sector’s contribution to food security and inclusive rural development.
Representatives from participating countries shared experiences and best practices related to livestock productivity enhancement, feed management, animal health systems and sustainable agricultural development.
The discussions concluded with a shared commitment among BRICS nations to strengthen research partnerships, encourage technology transfer and support innovation-led growth in the livestock sector.
What It Means for Hospitality, Food & Tourism
The livestock and dairy sector plays a crucial role in supplying essential ingredients to hotels, restaurants, catering businesses and food manufacturers.
Advancements in animal nutrition, feed efficiency and livestock productivity can help improve the availability and quality of dairy products, meat, poultry and other protein sources that form a significant part of hospitality supply chains.
For India’s rapidly expanding food service industry, sustainable livestock practices are increasingly important as consumers seek responsibly sourced products with stronger sustainability credentials. Improved feed systems can also contribute to lower production costs, greater efficiency and more resilient food supply networks.

The growing focus on nutritional security among BRICS nations aligns with broader trends in hospitality, where wellness tourism, health-conscious dining and premium food experiences continue to gain momentum.
In addition, stronger livestock development supports rural economies, creating opportunities for farm tourism, dairy tourism and agricultural experiences that are becoming increasingly popular among domestic and international travellers.
As food sustainability becomes a strategic priority for the hospitality industry, international collaborations such as the BRICS livestock dialogue could influence future innovations across dairy, food production and agricultural value chains.
