Looking to step away from the pace and demands of everyday life, travellers are increasingly drawn to places where silence is not an absence, but part of the experience. In 2026, 43% of travellers say they would take a holiday specifically to feel closer to the natural world, while one in four (%25) plans to embrace quieter pursuits during their trip. This growing desire to ‘slow down, clear the mind and regain a sense of calm’ is bringing secluded landscapes and nature-led journeys into sharper focus.

As demand for jaw-dropping, nature-centric adventures reaches new heights, Türkiye stands out as an unbeatable destination, especially with hidden natural wonders that become particularly spellbinding in autumn. Set amid the spectacular landscapes of Eastern Anatolia, Erzincan offers just the kind of escape today’s travellers are seeking. Once an important stop along the historic Silk Road, the city pairs a rich cultural legacy with natural formations rarely encountered elsewhere. From venturing into one of the world’s largest canyons to walking beside a travertine lake whose waters take on a striking crimson hue, Erzincan rewards those willing to leave familiar routes behind. Here are the extraordinary natural wonders that make this lesser-known destination worth the journey.

Natural Marvels Not to Miss

Kemaliye is a must-stop on Erzincan’s nature trail. Tucked into a valley along the banks of the Fırat River, it is a rare gem that holds both UNESCO World Heritage Tentative status and Cittaslow certification. The town welcomes adrenaline junkies with the famous Taş Yol (Stone Road)—a sheer, hand-carved 7-kilometre stretch flanked by 400-to-500-metre vertical cliffs, widely ranked among the world’s most dangerous roads. Once you clear the drive, you are greeted by Kemaliye’s local houses. But the real draw is the town’s dramatic landscape. Şahin Hill offers the absolute best vantage point for sweeping views of the area.

But the crown jewel of the town’s natural wonders is the Karanlık (Dark) Canyon. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the breathtaking canyon ranks among the world’s deepest canyons. This impressive valley is ideal for exhilarating outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing, canyoneering, wingsuit flying, and base jumping. The Karasu River, the largest branch of the Fırat River, also meanders through the valley, making it possible to enjoy water sports like rafting and canoeing.

Girlevik Waterfall and Otlukbeli Lake are among the city’s must-see natural wonders. At Girlevik Waterfall, spring and summer are perfect for watching the falls cascade through the landscape and enjoying a picnic beneath the surrounding trees. In autumn, the waterfall takes on a new character as the changing leaves add a riot of colour. At the same time, winter transforms it into a spectacular frozen wonder, with opportunities for ice climbing. Otlukbeli Lake, meanwhile, is another hidden national treasure. Formed as a travertine dam lake by mineral-rich waters, it is unique in the world for its distinctive basin and geological formation. Otlukbeli Lake also fascinates visitors with its red-hued waters. Mineral-rich waters emerging from cracks in the surrounding landscape mix with the area’s red soil, creating impressive visuals on the surface.

Take the Adventure Further: Into the Great Outdoors

From trekking and camping to off-roading and paragliding, Erzincan offers many other ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Surrounded by the Munzur, Esence (Keşiş), and Ergan mountain ranges, the city offers a different adventure in every season.

Rising between Erzincan and Tunceli, the Munzur Mountains offer spectacular scenery, with glacial lakes, highlands such as Merg and dense forests. The mountains are ideal for trekking, while visitors can also spot wildlife, join off-road tours, go rock climbing and mountain biking, or simply camp under the stars. Another great spot for year-round hiking, the Keşiş (Esence) Mountains are home to Aygır Lake, one of Türkiye’s highest crater lakes, as well as the Yedi Göller (Seven Lakes). Aygır Lake is perfect for angling, camping and boat trips, while Yedi Göller captivates visitors with year-round snow-capped peaks, deep blue lakes and breathtaking views. The Munzur and KeşişMountains are also popular spots for paragliding.

For a slower-paced trekking experience, Erzincan also offers peaceful natural spots away from the crowds. The Dumanlı Highlands in the Refahiye district is an ideal choice for those who want a quiet walk surrounded by nature. Plenty of other places offer a nature-immersed trip. Kemah and Bağıştaş Village in İliç, where lush landscapes meet a rich history, are both worth discovering. Üzümlü is another charming stop, known for its vineyards and gardens. Here, you can explore the vineyards and taste Cimin grapes, a local variety celebrated for its distinctive flavour. Ekşisu, a popular picnic spot among locals, is another place worth adding to your trekking itinerary. Home to natural mineral springs and expansive parkland, it also features a wetland where you can spot a variety of bird species, as well as thermal springs where you can enjoy the region’s healing waters.

Winter Escapes on Slopes

Known for its spectacular landscapes, Erzincan also comes alive in winter, with Mount Ergan, part of the Munzur range, drawing skiers and snow enthusiasts to the slopes. One of Türkiye’s newest ski resorts, Ergan has state-of-the-art facilities and offers a range of activities, from skiing and snowboarding to trekking and snowmobiling.
