Indian Railways Expands AI-Powered CCTV Network to Improve Passenger Safety

In a significant move to enhance passenger safety and strengthen security across India’s railway network, Indian Railways has installed CCTV surveillance systems at 3,215 railway stations and 13,409 passenger coaches. The initiative forms part of the Railways’ ongoing modernization and passenger security strategy, with deployment continuing in phases across the country.

The Ministry of Railways has also confirmed that all operational Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat train rakes are now fully equipped with CCTV cameras, providing continuous surveillance during journeys and improving onboard security.

According to information shared by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha, the CCTV systems deployed at stations are integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based video analytics, enabling features such as intrusion detection, loitering detection, and fallen person detection. These smart surveillance systems detected 9,840 security-related incidents between 2023 and June 2026, demonstrating their growing role in preventive railway security.

Northern and Western Railways Lead CCTV Deployment

Among railway zones, Northern Railway has the highest number of CCTV-equipped stations with 425 stations, followed by Western Railway (391) and Eastern Railway (271).

For passenger coaches, Western Railway leads with 1,735 CCTV-equipped coaches, while Northern Railway (1,483) and Southern Railway (1,481) closely follow.
