Four-lane Road Over Bridge with service roads to ease congestion, improve commuter movement and support Indore’s growing tourism and business landscape

Indore, June 17, 2026: In a significant infrastructure boost for Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital, Indian Railways has approved the rebuilding of Road Over Bridge (ROB) No. 103-C, popularly known as the Shastriya Bridge, in the Indore railway yard at an estimated cost of ₹139 crore.

The project is aimed at improving urban mobility, easing traffic congestion and strengthening rail-road integration in one of Central India’s fastest-growing cities. The redevelopment forms part of Indian Railways’ broader programme for modernization of road over bridges, road under bridges and associated urban transport infrastructure.

Key Highlights

  • ₹139 crore sanctioned for rebuilding Shastriya Bridge in Indore
  • Modern four-lane Road Over Bridge to replace existing structure
  • 72-metre camel-back superstructure with PSC girders planned
  • Six-metre-wide service roads on both sides for local traffic movement
  • Utility upgrades include sewer network modernization and electrical infrastructure renewal
  • Expected to reduce congestion and improve connectivity across the city
  • Supports Indore’s growing business, tourism and urban development needs

Modern Bridge Designed for Future Traffic Growth

The approved project includes construction of a new four-lane Road Over Bridge featuring a 72-metre camel-back superstructure supported by prestressed concrete (PSC) girders and a full viaduct arrangement.

Designed to handle rising traffic volumes, the bridge aims to provide safer and smoother vehicular movement while reducing bottlenecks in one of Indore’s important transport corridors.

To improve local accessibility and traffic circulation, six-metre-wide service roads will be developed beneath the bridge on both sides, ensuring uninterrupted movement for local commuters and maintenance access.

Comprehensive Urban Infrastructure Upgrade

Beyond the bridge reconstruction, the project includes extensive modernization of public utility infrastructure.

Existing sewer systems in the project area will be relocated and upgraded through the construction of new sewer lines to maintain uninterrupted drainage services.

Electrical infrastructure will also be renewed, including installation of new poles, lighting systems and associated facilities, contributing to improved urban amenities and public safety.

The integrated approach reflects a growing emphasis on combining transportation projects with broader urban infrastructure improvements.

Enhancing Connectivity in Madhya Pradesh’s Commercial Hub

Indore continues to witness rapid growth in population, commercial activity and vehicle ownership, increasing pressure on existing transportation infrastructure.

The redevelopment of Shastriya Bridge is expected to improve east-west connectivity, reduce traffic delays and facilitate smoother movement between key residential, commercial and institutional zones of the city.

Enhanced rail-road integration will also support more efficient movement around the busy railway yard area, benefiting both daily commuters and visitors.

Impact on Tourism and Hospitality

As one of India’s cleanest cities and an emerging tourism and business destination, Indore has seen rising visitor traffic linked to leisure tourism, religious circuits, food tourism and corporate travel.

Improved urban mobility infrastructure plays a critical role in shaping visitor experiences by reducing travel times and enhancing accessibility to hotels, convention venues, restaurants, transport hubs and tourist attractions.

The city serves as a gateway to several important destinations in Madhya Pradesh, including Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar and Omkareshwar. Better road connectivity within Indore can contribute to smoother tourist movement across the wider regional tourism circuit.

Benefits for Business Travel and Urban Development

For the hospitality sector, infrastructure upgrades that reduce congestion and improve accessibility can directly influence visitor convenience and business activity.

Hotels, event venues, retail centres and commercial establishments benefit from improved urban transport efficiency, particularly in cities such as Indore that are increasingly positioning themselves as investment, convention and tourism destinations.

The project is also expected to support long-term urban development by creating infrastructure capable of accommodating future traffic growth while improving safety and operational efficiency.

Strengthening India’s Urban Transport Network

The Shastriya Bridge redevelopment reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on creating safer, more efficient and better-integrated transportation infrastructure across urban India.

By combining modern engineering, utility upgrades and improved traffic management, the project is expected to deliver long-term benefits for commuters, businesses and visitors alike while supporting Indore’s emergence as one of Central India’s most dynamic economic and tourism centres.
