Rail capacity enhancement on Kerala’s coastal corridor is expected to improve passenger movement, support tourism growth and strengthen regional logistics

Key Highlights

  • Indian Railways has sanctioned the ₹220.51 crore doubling of the 10.65 km Mararikulam–Alappuzha section under Southern Railway.
  • The project will eliminate the last remaining single-line stretch on the Ernakulam–Alappuzha–Kayamkulam corridor.
  • Upon completion, the route will be capable of operating 9 additional passenger trains in each direction every day.
  • The upgraded corridor will support 2.88 million tonnes of freight traffic annually.
  • The project is expected to improve punctuality, reduce congestion and enhance connectivity across Kerala.
  • Better rail infrastructure is likely to benefit the hospitality, tourism and business travel sectors along Kerala’s popular coastal destinations.

Indian Railways Strengthens Kerala’s Coastal Rail Corridor

Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the Mararikulam–Alappuzha railway section at a cost of ₹220.51 crore, marking an important step toward expanding capacity on one of Kerala’s key transportation corridors.

The 10.65 km project has been sanctioned under Indian Railways’ broader programme for doubling, tripling and capacity augmentation works aimed at improving network efficiency across the country.

Notably, the Mararikulam–Alappuzha stretch is currently the only remaining single-line section on the Ernakulam–Turavur–Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha–Kayamkulam corridor, where other doubling projects have already been completed or are under implementation.

Higher Capacity for Passenger and Freight Services

According to Indian Railways, completion of the project will enable:

  • 9 additional passenger trains in each direction every day
  • Freight movement of approximately 2.88 million tonnes per annum
  • Improved line capacity
  • Reduced detention of passenger and freight trains
  • Faster and smoother train operations
  • Better punctuality across the corridor

The project is also expected to generate additional annual net earnings of approximately ₹3.08 crore through enhanced passenger and freight traffic.

Part of India’s High-Density Rail Network Strategy

The proposal has been identified under Mission 3000 MT and the High Density Traffic Network Corridor programme of Indian Railways, reflecting its strategic importance for long-term network expansion.

The project has demonstrated strong economic viability, with:

  • Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR): 3.99%
  • Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR): 22.30%

These indicators highlight the broader economic benefits expected from improved connectivity and operational efficiency.

Impact on Hospitality, Travel & Tourism

The project carries significant implications for Kerala’s tourism and hospitality industry, particularly as the corridor serves destinations known for beaches, backwaters and cultural experiences.

Better Access to Kerala’s Tourism Circuit

Improved rail capacity can facilitate smoother travel for tourists visiting the Alappuzha region, one of India’s leading destinations for houseboats, coastal tourism and wellness experiences.

Growth for Hotels and Resorts

Enhanced connectivity is likely to support higher visitor volumes, benefiting hotels, resorts, homestays and restaurants by making travel more convenient throughout the year.

Boost to Domestic Tourism

Additional passenger train capacity can encourage weekend and short-break travel from major urban centres, strengthening domestic tourism and increasing occupancy across hospitality establishments.

Support for Business and MICE Travel

Improved railway operations also benefit business travellers and event organisers by offering more reliable transportation options, complementing Kerala’s expanding meetings and convention ecosystem.

Stronger Hospitality Supply Chains

The increase in freight capacity can improve the movement of food products, beverages and hospitality supplies across the region, supporting hotels, caterers and tourism businesses with more efficient logistics.

Industry Takeaway

The ₹220 crore Mararikulam–Alappuzha doubling project is more than a railway infrastructure upgrade—it is an investment in Kerala’s tourism economy. By removing a key bottleneck on a major coastal corridor, the project is expected to enhance passenger mobility, strengthen freight logistics and create new opportunities for the hospitality and travel sectors as visitor demand continues to grow.
