Indian Railways’ New Intercity Train Programme Could Transform Regional Travel and Tourism

NEW DELHI, May 28, 2026: Indian Railways is preparing to launch a major expansion of regional rail connectivity with plans to manufacture 200 new-generation intercity trains at its upcoming rail manufacturing facility in Kazipet, Telangana.

The announcement was made following a review of the Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu. Officials indicated that the facility is nearing completion and will initially focus on producing a fleet of modern intercity trains over the next five years.

The new trains are expected to operate on short and medium-distance routes of approximately 300 kilometres, connecting towns and emerging urban centres through frequent-stop services designed to support daily commuters and regional travellers.

A New Model for Regional Mobility

Unlike long-distance express services, the planned intercity trains are intended to function as high-frequency regional connectors, offering a faster and more comfortable alternative to road-based travel.

Railway officials envision the services acting as shuttle-style networks linking neighbouring cities, educational hubs, healthcare centres and commercial districts.

With operating speeds of up to 130 kmph, the trains are expected to significantly improve travel times while providing affordable transportation options for a broad range of passengers.

The introduction of these services could encourage greater use of rail transport on routes currently dominated by buses and private vehicles.

Modern Passenger Experience

The new trainsets will incorporate several passenger-focused features, including automatic door-closing systems, enhanced ventilation and improved coach safety standards.

Each train will consist of 20 coaches equipped with modern bogies and jerk-free coupler technology designed to provide smoother journeys.

Every coach will feature toilets at both ends, enhancing convenience for passengers travelling on regional routes.

The emphasis on comfort and operational efficiency reflects Indian Railways’ broader effort to modernise passenger services and improve the overall travel experience.

Hospitality and Tourism Impact

For the hospitality and tourism industry, expanded regional rail connectivity could create new opportunities for destination development and domestic travel growth.

Many emerging tourism destinations are located within a few hundred kilometres of major cities but often face accessibility challenges due to road congestion or limited public transport options.

The introduction of frequent intercity rail services could improve access to heritage destinations, pilgrimage centres, leisure destinations, hill stations and secondary tourism markets that are increasingly attracting domestic travellers.

Hotels, resorts, restaurants and tourism operators located along future intercity rail corridors may benefit from higher visitor volumes and increased weekend travel demand.

Industry experts note that better rail connectivity often leads to growth in short-break tourism, business travel and regional leisure tourism, segments that continue to expand across India.

Supporting Sustainable Travel

The new train programme also aligns with growing interest in environmentally responsible transportation.

The trains will feature regenerative braking technology, allowing energy generated during braking to be fed back into the system. This improves energy efficiency and reduces overall power consumption.

As rail travel generally produces lower carbon emissions per passenger compared to road transport, the expansion of intercity rail services could contribute to India’s broader sustainability objectives while providing a cleaner mobility option for travellers.

For destinations increasingly promoting sustainable tourism practices, improved rail connectivity offers an important complement to ongoing efforts to reduce tourism-related emissions.

Kazipet Emerges as a Strategic Manufacturing Hub

The near-completion of the Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit marks an important addition to India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem.

Beyond supporting domestic transport modernisation, the facility is expected to strengthen India’s rolling stock production capabilities and contribute to employment generation and industrial development in the region.

As the first batch of intercity trains enters production, the initiative is expected to play a key role in reshaping regional transportation networks while supporting tourism, hospitality and economic growth across multiple states.

The rollout of the 200-train programme signals Indian Railways’ growing focus on creating faster, greener and more accessible regional mobility solutions for the next phase of India’s travel and tourism growth.
