North Eastern Railway to get advanced automatic train protection system across balance sections of Izzatnagar Division

Key Highlights

  • ₹295 crore approved for Kavach Version 4.0 across 660 route km.
  • Project covers the balance sections of Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway.
  • Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
  • System is designed to help prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions.
  • Kavach can automatically apply brakes when required and support safe train operations during adverse weather, including dense fog.

Indian Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 660 route kilometres of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway (NER) at an estimated cost of ₹295 crore.

The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella work for the provision of Kavach with a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) communication backbone on the balance sections of Indian Railways.

Kavach 4.0 to strengthen railway safety

Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system, designed to continuously monitor train movements and enhance operational safety.

The system is intended to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions. When required, Kavach can automatically apply brakes, helping trains operate safely at their maximum permissible speeds.

The system also supports train operations during challenging weather conditions, including dense fog, by strengthening safety mechanisms when visibility is reduced.

660-km deployment covers balance sections

The approved project will cover the remaining identified sections of the Izzatnagar Division.

The deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across these sections is expected to further strengthen the safety infrastructure of the North Eastern Railway network and improve operational reliability.

Impact on travel and tourism

While Kavach is primarily a railway safety initiative, improved rail safety and operational reliability can have wider implications for passenger travel and tourism.

Safer train journeys: Enhanced automatic protection can improve passenger confidence in rail travel.

More reliable tourism connectivity: Strengthened railway operations can support dependable travel to destinations served by the Izzatnagar Division.

Hospitality demand: Reliable rail connectivity can contribute to tourist movement and support hotels, restaurants, local transport and other tourism businesses around railway-connected destinations.

Travel during fog: The system’s ability to support safe operations during dense fog is particularly relevant for maintaining confidence in rail travel during periods of reduced visibility.

Bottom line

The ₹295 crore Kavach 4.0 project covering 660 route km represents another step in strengthening railway safety infrastructure. For travellers and the tourism sector, improved safety and operational reliability can help make rail a more dependable mode of passenger and destination connectivity.
