New Delhi, August 1, 2026: Indian Railways has approved a ₹976 crore multitracking project between Danapur and Fatuha in Bihar, aimed at easing congestion on one of the busiest sections of the Patna rail corridor and increasing capacity for both passenger and freight services.

The 29-km project, being implemented under East Central Railway, will add additional tracks across key sections around Patna, helping improve train movement and operational efficiency.

Three Rail Sections to Receive Additional Tracks

The sanctioned project includes three major components:

• Danapur–Patna: Third and fourth lines
• Rajendra Nagar–Patna Saheb: Third line
• Patna Saheb–Fatuha: Third and fourth lines

The additional infrastructure is expected to reduce congestion, minimise delays and improve train punctuality across the Patna region.

40 Additional Trains Every Day

Once operational, the project is expected to provide capacity for 22 additional passenger trains and 18 additional freight trains every day in its first year.

The expanded rail infrastructure will also enable the movement of an additional 5.2 million tonnes of freight annually.

For passengers, the additional capacity could create greater scope for train frequency and improved operational flexibility on a heavily utilised route.

Strengthening the Patna Rail Corridor

The project forms part of the wider quadrupling initiative on the Delhi–Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction–Patna–Kiul–Bhagalpur–Khanna–Howrah route.

The route has also been identified as part of Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor, making the capacity expansion important for industrial and bulk freight movement.

The strengthened railway network will also support the upcoming 2,120 MW thermal power plant at Chausa in Buxar district, which will rely on rail transportation for bulk inputs.
