Railways Conducts Recruitment Exams Across 150+ Cities in 15 Languages, Strengthening Workforce and Supporting Future Network Expansion

Indian Railways has significantly accelerated its recruitment drive under a mission-mode approach, completing 5.56 lakh recruitments between 2014 and June 2026, compared to 4.11 lakh recruitments during 2004-2014. The recruitment push includes 50,485 appointments in Southern Railway, reflecting the government’s continued focus on strengthening manpower to support expanding railway operations and infrastructure.

According to information shared by Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha, Indian Railways has also institutionalised an Annual Recruitment Calendar from 2024, bringing greater transparency, predictability and faster hiring for railway aspirants across the country.

Indian Railways said recruitment remains a continuous process, driven by operational requirements, technological advancements, mechanisation and expanding railway infrastructure.

Massive Recruitment Exercise Across India

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have undertaken one of the country’s largest recruitment exercises.

2024 Recruitment Cycle

  • 10 Centralised Employment Notifications (CENs) issued.
  • 92,116 vacancies notified.
  • Recruitment for:
    • Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs)
    • Technicians
    • Junior Engineers
    • Railway Protection Force (RPF)
    • Non-Technical Popular Categories (Graduate & Undergraduate)
    • Paramedical Staff
    • Ministerial & Isolated Categories
    • Level-1 posts

More than 3.58 crore candidates appeared in the first-stage and single-stage CBTs conducted across 139–157 cities in 15 languages.

2025 Recruitment Cycle

Indian Railways notified another:

  • 9 recruitment notifications
  • 51,970 vacancies

Recruitment covers:

  • Assistant Loco Pilots
  • Technicians
  • Section Controllers
  • Junior Engineers
  • NTPC Categories
  • Paramedical Staff
  • Isolated Categories
  • Level-1 posts

Nearly 91 lakh candidates participated in CBTs conducted across more than 130 cities.

2026 Recruitment Cycle

Three recruitment notifications have already been issued for:

  • 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot posts
  • 6,557 Technician posts
  • 119 Section Controller posts

Together, they account for 17,803 vacancies notified during the current recruitment cycle.

Technology-Driven Recruitment Process

The Railway Recruitment Boards have conducted examinations entirely through Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) supported by large-scale digital infrastructure.

The recruitment process includes:

  • CBTs conducted in 15 Indian languages
  • Computer-Based Aptitude Tests (CBAT)
  • Computer-Based Typing Skill Tests
  • Translation Tests for specific categories

The multilingual and multi-city approach is intended to improve accessibility for candidates from across the country.
