In a landmark development for regional logistics and international rail connectivity, Indian Railways has successfully operated India’s first direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal. The historic service marks the beginning of seamless end-to-end rail-based container transportation between the two countries under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol.

The inaugural train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, completed its journey without requiring cargo transshipment at the border, paving the way for faster, more efficient and cost-effective cross-border trade.

A New Era for India-Nepal Rail Freight

The direct freight operation represents a significant upgrade in India-Nepal logistics by enabling uninterrupted rail movement of containerised cargo from Kolkata Port directly to Biratnagar.

Previously, cargo often required handling and transshipment at the border, increasing transportation time and operational costs. The revised rail transit framework now allows seamless end-to-end freight movement, making rail logistics more competitive for exporters, importers and logistics providers.

The service has become operational following the revised Letter of Exchange (LoE) signed in November 2025, which expanded the scope of the India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol.
