New rail infrastructure projects on Kazipet–Vijayawada corridor expected to improve passenger mobility, freight efficiency and regional connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate railway infrastructure projects worth around ₹1,535 crore in Telangana on May 10, 2026, aimed at enhancing rail connectivity, reducing congestion and improving passenger and freight movement across key routes in the state.
The projects include multi-tracking works on the Kazipet–Vijayawada corridor and the new Kazipet Rail Under Rail Bypass, both expected to strengthen operational efficiency on one of India’s busiest rail networks.
Key Highlights
- ₹1,535 crore railway infrastructure projects to be dedicated in Telangana
- 118 km multi-tracking project on Kazipet–Vijayawada corridor completed
- 21 km Kazipet Rail Under Rail Bypass to ease junction congestion
- Projects to benefit Hanumakonda, Warangal, Mahabubabad and Khammam districts
- Faster passenger movement and improved train punctuality expected
- Freight movement of coal, cement and agricultural produce to improve
- Strengthens connectivity on the Delhi–Chennai rail corridor
Kazipet–Vijayawada Corridor Expansion to Improve Rail Capacity
A major portion of the project involves 118 km of multi-tracking works on the Kazipet–Vijayawada rail corridor, including sections between:
- Warangal – Kazipet
- Nekonda – Mahabubabad
- Errupalem – Dornakal Junction
The corridor is part of the crucial Grand Trunk rail route connecting northern and southern India and handles heavy passenger as well as freight traffic.
According to Indian Railways, the upgraded infrastructure will significantly improve line capacity, enabling faster train movement, reducing congestion and improving punctuality across the route.
The project is expected to benefit passengers travelling between Telangana and major destinations across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and northern India.
Hospitality and Tourism Connectivity Set for Improvement
The enhanced rail infrastructure is expected to support regional tourism and business travel across Telangana by improving transit efficiency and reducing delays.
Improved connectivity through key districts such as Warangal and surrounding regions could support tourism movement, hotel occupancy and local hospitality businesses, particularly during festival and holiday travel periods.
Faster rail movement may also improve accessibility for religious tourism, regional leisure travel and inter-state business mobility.
Kazipet Rail Bypass to Reduce Junction Congestion
Prime Minister Modi will also dedicate the 21 km Kazipet Rail Under Rail Bypass, designed to decongest the busy Kazipet Junction railway hub.
The bypass will allow simultaneous train movement towards Hyderabad, Balharshah and Vijayawada, helping reduce operational conflicts and waiting times for trains crossing the junction.
Railways officials said the project will streamline train scheduling, improve punctuality and strengthen freight efficiency on the important Delhi–Chennai corridor.
Freight and Industrial Movement to Get a Boost
The upgraded rail capacity is expected to improve transportation of:
- Coal
- Cement
- Fertilizers
- Agricultural produce
- Industrial goods
The infrastructure expansion is likely to benefit industries, farmers and logistics operators in Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh through faster and more efficient freight movement.
Indian Railways said the projects align with its broader focus on developing a high-capacity, future-ready rail network supporting economic growth, passenger convenience and regional development.
